We loved them in the sixties, with the mods and rockers on their scooters and big bikes. Then came the superbike, a sports-style powerful bike that is designed with speed in mind, and in order to ride such a bike, you need to have a class A licence that allows unrestricted riding. If you are over the age of 17 years, you can apply for a provisional driving licence that will enable you to ride bikes up to 125cc, which is enough power for a novice rider.

125cc Entry Level Bike

If you have a provisional licence in the UK, you are able to ride a 125cc bike; a single-cylinder 4-stroke, liquid-cooled engine with a 6-speed gearbox and great handling. Check out the stylish and very affordable used bikes from Wheels Motorcycles, a leading UK big bike dealership with a great reputation within the biking community.

Honda

One of the leading bike manufacturers with an excellent racing pedigree, Honda are proud of their CBR series, starting with the CB125R, with 500, 650 and 750cc bikes, then the 1000cc+ machines, which are the flagships. The CB125R incorporates state-of-the-art racing technology and is a real eye-catcher, with electric start and LED instrumentation and lighting and with wide racing profile tyres, the bike handles solidly on all road surfaces.

Suzuki

The latest addition to the Suzuki stable is the GSXS 125X, a very good-looking bike that is lightweight and powerful for commuting or fun riding. If you would like to view a wide range of new and used 125cc bikes, check out Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki, as all the major manufacturers are represented in the 125cc class. Yamaha

The Yamaha MT Series is of the hyper-naked style, with an open engine that bristles with new tech, and with bikes ranging from 300cc to 1,300cc, there’s bound to be something that suits you. This bike is designed for urban riding, with a fast, lightweight bike that is very agile, with bags of power for riding through traffic congestion.

Kawasaki

The VERSYS range is a rugged yet refined urban street bike, with a neat 300cc version that is easy to manoeuvre, with a 650cc mid-range engine and the 1,000cc flagship. The VERSYS can be great for touring as well as a street bike and this is a firm favourite for many hardcore riders, and the dealership can offer attractive finance to spread the payments over a couple of years.

Wearing the Right Protective Gear

Bike riding in any country demands the right protective clothing and equipment, which would include the following:

  • Good quality full-face helmet.
  • Leather motorcycle jacket.
  • Leather riding pants – Heavy denim jeans are acceptable.
  • Good quality motorcycle gloves.
  • Boots with ankle support.

Leather is perfect as it offers the best protection for your skin against the tarmac and while a good quality leather biking jacket won’t be cheap, it will last you a lifetime. Some bikers invest in a one-piece leather riding suit, which offers the very best in terms of protection. Click here for UK government information about motorcycle licences and bike categories.

If you invest in one of the 125cc street bikes, you will have a stylish and very affordable mode of transportation and after a couple of years, you can upgrade to a more powerful machine.
